Field notes, not thought leadership

Everything here came out of a live engagement. If we could not use it on a client site next Monday, we did not publish it.

The four line items behind most Australian AWS bills

Across thirty-odd cost engagements, the same four culprits account for the majority of avoidable spend: inter-AZ and egress data transfer, non-production environments running 168 hours a week, RDS instances sized for a load test from 2022, and orphaned snapshots nobody has ever been billed a line item for. Here is how we quantify each in a week — and what to do about them in the order that pays back fastest.

Why your RAG pilot stalled at 70% accuracy

It is almost never the model. Chunking strategy, embedding choice and the absence of a real evaluation set explain most of the gap — and all three are fixable in a fortnight.

Essential Eight maturity level two, entirely in code

Three of the eight map cleanly onto AWS-native controls. Three need tooling. Two are organisational, and no amount of Terraform will change that.

Why we put a kill switch in every AI engagement

Stage gates with explicit abandonment criteria, agreed before the build starts. It makes saying no cheap, which makes saying yes safer.

More on the way

We publish when an engagement produces something worth writing down, which works out to roughly one article a month. The dispatch is the reliable way to catch them.
